Default Steering

My 1990 Corvette steers hard, almost like there's no power assist. I'm thinking the rack and pinion need rebuilding. Any ideas on what it might be?

I thought that by 1990 they had the "morning sickness" thing cured, but that may be what you are experiencing. Does the steering moan when the vehicle is first started from cold?

First make sure your belt and tensioner are both good. A slipping belt will cause you not to have any power steering.

Do a FULL flush on it. Open the lines and let it drain, then fill it with good Lucas brand fluid...and or Valvoline synthetic. Run the car, then drain. Do this several times (yes...it will cost you a few bucks).

I have had great luck in getting them to come back to life after getting rid of that 14 year old fluid. Chances are...it has never been fully serviced before.

When I felt mine starting to get a little more sick on the morning sickness I flushed the power steering and added new stuff (check if your fluid is dark/discoloured like pencil lead tone) and it may have helped a touch. I have to do my rack in the spring I guess. Not sure when they fixed that cold morning yank-and grunt thing but mine sure has it. Follow the above advice to do with the belt and such...
