Progress Report - Nov.22

Things are moving again and the doors, hood, exhaust panel and headlight buckets are all fitted.

We've mounted the front and rear bumpers to check for fit with the new wide fenders and made the most minor of adjustments to get a good fit.

On Monday afternoon, we're lifting the body back onto the wooden dolly. Then, it's up on to the hoist for some last minute clean-up to the fiberglass underneath before spraying it body colour with acrylic enamel. Why acrylic enamel underneath? Because it's stronger and has greater hiding qualities for the little imperfections that exist under all cars. You might even be asking, "Why paint underneath....the factory didn't!" The answer. "Cause I want to."

The plan is to have the underneath painted by next Saturday, the 29th.

Then, it'll be time to rivet the seatbelt reinforcement brackets, seat-track reinforcement brackets, etc. in place just prior to the trip into the paint booth for the topside spray in base/clear.

It'll be home for Christmas.

Then the real work begins.

I love being there in my dirty coveralls, working on the car, and hearing the comments from other customers (who don't know I'm the owner).

"Holy crap.....look at that beautiful chassis. Is that new?"

"Man, how did he get those huge wheels under there?"

"Is this thing for sale?

Sounds good,glad to see things are coming along.Next time somebody makes remarks like that ,say "I heard this was being built for Bill Gates."

Shop guys love those kinda rumors.I once painted an Auburn Boat tail speedster for an elderly Gentlemen who was the owner of a local and popular brewery in town.Kinda cool.

How excititing

How are you going to able to sleep when it does come home? My problem always is when I get started I dont want to stop untill I am complete.

Glad you're still making progress, 67! I've been watching the website but you already knew that, right?

I saw a picture of a black 67 coupe with the bb hood but no "stinger" decal recently. It was lowered (or at least on low profile tires) and wearing black centered wheels so it looked low, lean and mean; very cool!

The great thing about these fenders and the Vette Brake Performance Plus suspension is that I can dial this car down low enough to scrape the oil-pan on the 427.

Meanwhile, we did get the fitted doors and hood back off, and lifted the body back on to the dolly.

After that, I reinstalled the hood to give the cement block another couple of days to finish its job. CEMENT BLOCK!!!! you say.

Yep, the hood had a wow in it ever since it replaced the stolen hood while a warranty engine was being installed.

It's amazing how well this works. We propped the rear of the hood up and then laid the cement block dead center on the wow. The driver's side is completely fixed....the passenger side should be done in a day or two.

[Historical Footnote] I got a new short block under warranty in late 1968. While waiting for the replacement block, the dealer "laid" (not bolted) the hood back on and pushed the car outside. Was the hood there in the morning? What do you think? The replacement hood had a wow from day one, but that's being fixed right now......35 years later.

How much higher was the hood than the fender line before you started "blocking" it?

Driver's side: 3/32"
Passenger: 1/8"

Both sides in the area represented by the center of the block.

I know that this been a longtime coming, congrats. If you are like me, you will have time for nothing else until the car is up and running. It is so much easier to stay focused when you can see the light at the end of the tunnel!
