if these are real pictures of the new c6 do you think gm is trying to steal viper sales. you know people who have camo.and firebirds want vettes people who have vettes want vipers people who have vipers want turbo porsches.etc. vipers have always been a little out of reach price wise but a vette that looks and runs like a viper only cheaper sounds like a winner. remember everything at gm is about the dollar there is no loyalty to a style that doesn't make $$$$.
Of course GM is trying to get Viper sales! That is the whole goal behind the C6. And not necessarily sales, because the Viper is a very low production car, and the Corvette sells 30,000+ a year, but more of recapturing the prestige of America's #1 performing sports car.
And while it's true that Camaro/Firebird owners would all probably upgrade to a Corvette if they could, I disagree that all Corvette owners want a Viper. The Viper cannot compare to the Corvette's history of being America's top dog, and it will only be a matter of time before the Corvette reclaims that spot. In many ways, it still is.

The Corvette is a VERY successful icon / model line for GM. Much more successful than the Viper. However, outselling viper 3 to 1 is not as good as outselling viper 4 or 5 to 1, so ... sure they would love to put Viper out of business. They might do it yet.

No offense tt-rex, but I'm driving my 4th vette, and I've NEVER wanted a viper, or ANY porsche. I think it's unfair and incorrect to assume that everyone who drives a vette is a wanna be.....
However,....... if I had the bucks, there would DEFINITELY be a black stallion in my garage...... (and a shiney red vette too!):cool

Viper! Please that thing is ugly. The new ones look like a Honda S2000. I would never own one. For that pirce I could buy a Z06 and send to Lingenfelter and a car that would crush a Viper.

Glad to hear that you wave Rocket. Very few of the C5 owners wave out here, while nearly all C4 and more experienced models do. I have found it doesn't have much to do with the age of the driver either. Wonder if more C5 drivers will wave when the C6s are on the road?
Hey I heard that they expect Viper sales to double this year, a Las Vegas casino owner wants one on the roof of the hotel.
:D
The Viper is good. The Corvette will only get better as the competition gets better. If they add 50 HP to the Viper, you can look forward to an extra 50 HP in your next Corvette. I, for one, want that Viper out there as an inspiration to GM to support their engineers in making the Corvette as good as it can be. We don't want their grand goal to be a car that can beat a Mustang.

I have no disire to own a Viper. It is a Crysler (Dodge) after all and who wants one of those. Not me. I will stick with my Vette. :_rock
Not much of a viper fan here. Even if I won one at some slot machine in Vegas I'd take the cash equiv and buy a vette.

Not sure I agree that the viper is good, except in a straight line of course. But I emphatically the a the competition is good for the breed and good specifically for the vette. We are about to see the expansion of Corvette and some very serious performance cars. GM is about to performance-shine again for the first time since the muscle car era, and they will be much better at performance this time around.

I think the real competitor for the C6 will be the Mustang Cobra. The 2005 model will surely have at least 390hp, most likely more. There have been rumors that they will put a 5.0 or even the same engine that is in the Ford GT (500hp). Not to mention the price which is currently less than a Covette. With the new (extremely ugly) body style comming out the same year as the C6, it will be interesting to see who comes out on top on both power and sales.
Go C6!!!

Rob told me to play nice one time when I started VIPER Bashing. He reminded me that Vipers and Vettes are made in North America and they both are great cars. I saw the Light and I would be proud to have either one parked in my driveway. When I was in my teens my favorite car was #1 Hemi CUDA 440 #2 Corvette Stingray 427. Now things have changed #1 ZedO6 #2 Dodge Viper. Ford has only ever made one car I really liked and its not a mutstang. I loved the Ford COBRA. HMMM 1 Zed 2 Fish and 2 snakes I'm seeing a pattern.

:D FACT: Vipers are FAST and hold their own on Road Courses as well as the Drag Strip! If you have ever been to a "Viper Days" event, you will see a group of guys that run their cars hard! Many are Good Drivers and a Viper has the edge on the Z06 down the straights.
;) We (Z06'ers) can keep up with them because of the Vette's handling & braking! A well driven Late Model Viper is right there with the Z06 and it really depends on the driver! Don't sell the Viper short... the issues it has is repair Cost and Dependability. The car is very strong with a good driver!

Nick,
That's what my buddy keeps saying. His mom works for Ford, he's a former employee of Ford so they're kind of loyal.:L:L He points at my Vette' and says, "That's what Ford is gunning for next. They're going to make this new Mustang that'll have at least 390hp." I tell him, "By the time that comes out, the C6 Corvette will be out." I tell him that the current Cobra with the blower in it can likely run C5's, but they can't hang with the big boy Z06's.

It seems to me that the viper is not really a production car at all, how many do you see? It will never be a threat to corvette sales, nomatter the hp (howmuch can you use on the street?) the viper looks clunky to me and our vettes are american icons, that are never going away. With some hard work and sacrafice most of us working people can afford a corvette can the same be said for the viper? I maybe a new vette owner , but i can asure you all, I want to move up not out of vettes!lol! see ya on the road!! Capt Bane

Viper? Porsche? No, way. Like many others, if you gave me either of those, I'd just sell it and get a good car (ie, Corvette)

Isn't the GT engine going to be hand-built? If so, I don't think it will end up in a car that is not a limited-run (like the GT)

I couldn't tell you Joe. I don't know a great deal about the car. I was just surfing a Mustang forum to find some info on the new Mustang and Cobra and came across a thread that mentioned the rumor of using the GT engine in the Cobra. We all know how unreliable that info can be though. That's why I said rumored. More than likely it will never happen. The GT has a 5.4L Supercharged all aluminium V-8, I haven't heard about it being hand built. You're probably right though, with a price tag at $140,000+ it better hand built!

A recent article in Hot Rod said the GT-40 engine will be built in the same factory but by specially trained workers or something simular.
All those exotic cars are just that "EXOTIC" and beyond the means of most people I would like to see sales numbers as well as performance figures when it comes time to pick who is number one.
the Corvette has been around since 1953 while many others have come and gone
Shelby Cobra
Pantera
Delorean
Thunderbird (back again but I don't see it as a threat)
As for owning something other then a Vette I don't see it in my future even if I had unlimited funds. (my dreamcar is a GS clone with a Gaerte built aluminum SB and modern suspension)

I presently own my third Corvette. I DO NOT and WILL NOT EVER want a Viper. Even if I had the money. It was built to be a challenge to the Corvette and it's history. Not the other way around. The C6 will not look like a Viper.
The GT gets a supercharged version of the 5.4L V8 from the F-150. It may be alluminum for the GT, but that doesn't mean that Ford won't put a supercharged 5.4L V8 in the Mustang.

The beauty of this great country is being able to choose from a great selection of AMERICAN made automobiles. All the competitors involved build really great machines. I work on high performance aircraft and I appreciate the difference in performance levels of different aircraft. Simply put, I also have my favorites.
Jets are the same as cars to me.
I did let my girl know that if she got a mustang we were dun.

I own a vette and a while back it was a late model.I still love my vette and I would NEVER trade it for a Viper. If I had the bucks the only thing that would take it's place in my garage is a prancing horse.
