Default Odd electrical problem

My shark , all of a sardine , developed a wierd problem , I noticed the battery wasnt charging and when turning the car OFF - the red battery light which normally lights when the ignition is turned on , stays ON!!!!.
Only way to get it off is to disconnect the battery - the Oil pressure guage also acts wierdly when the car is running , it flicks from normal to full right on an intermittent basis , almost like grounding the sender wire?
Any ideas before I take the car to the Auto electrician?

Yeh -- thanks the alternator was buggered - had to get a new one.
What I really wish was that the folk before me hadnt messed with the wiring and added all sorts of wires that dont belong , go nowhere etc.
Im finding lots of "buried" treasure in the car , like alarm override switches , alarm systems , realys for goddness knows what , audio amps etc.
