Default "rattling" engine noise in '97

Hi all...

New member and new owner.

I'm hearing what can only be described as a "rattling" noise coming from my newly purchased '97.

I'm sure it's coming from the engine and I remember reading somewhere about a "known" noise that owner's report and then live with.

I'm perfectly happy to do that as long as I know that:
a) I'm not alone with this.
b) It's not causing damage.

any help and advice would be sincerely appreciated.

Thanks

4Down

Welcome to the CAC.
"A rattling" noise is sort of broad. Can you be a little more specific? Is it engine, transmission, something in the interior?
Post up a few details and I’m sure people will start to chime in.

Definately in the engine. Almost sounds like a slipping serpentine belt, but there's a very mechanical sound to it, and not much squeaking. I would have said lifters in the old days.

Read the thread on "lifter noise on 2002 coupe" and see if anything sounds familiar to you.

if your C-5 is a 6 speed this rattling noise is in the torque tube and is mentioned in the owners manual as normal.

Default noise

There is a bulletin for the idler pulley bearing and there is a first design and second design idler pulley.

just remove the belt from the engine and start the engine and see if the noise goes away to see if it is the idler pulley
