Usually this means an electical problem like low voltage or some other unstable electrical issue.

In the past when I have received this light it has always been a sign of needing a new battery. However, it can mean something else is wrong.

Check the battery.

What is the voltage gauge showing?
before start, during start, after running for a while?

Mine did this after getting the battery checked at Auto Zone.
SYS flashed after I left.

They said thebattery was good.
They were wrong. (haha)

SYS went away that night.

guessed it was caused by the kid at Auto Zone hooking both leads to the battery and not pos to bat- neg to engine hoist point.

But anyhow. the battery was indeed bad .
(7 years on a 6 year AC delco)
Put ina new yellow top from Wal Mart and ALL WAS FIXED

Good luck

Mike, any time the SYS light flashes it is giving you a heads up that there has been a fault code stored in its (the computer's) memory. There are methods for pulling the codes with a paper clip or other such jumper device.

You need to insert the jumper between the diagnostic terminal (B) and the ground terminal (A). With the diagnostic terminal grounded, and the ignition key on but engine not running, the system enters a diagnotic mode. In this mode the ECM will display a "Code 12" by flashing the Check Engine light, indicating that the sytem is operating. A "Code 12" is simply one flash, followed by a brief pause, then two flashes in quicjk succession. This code will be flashed three times. If no other codes are stored, Code 12 will continue to flash until the diagnostic terminal ground is removed.

After flashing Code 12 three times, the ECM will display any stored trouble codes. Each code will be flashed three times, then Code 12 will be flashed again, indicating that the display of stored trouble codes has been completed.

Once you pull a trouble code, we can proceed with a diagnosis of the trouble.

Hi Mike.
Got your message but I thought I'd respond here as it might help if others see it also.

Regarding a no start condition 3 times recently. We need a little more information - what did it do or not do?
No crank? Crank but no start? etc.

Follow Ken's advice and pull the codes, then let's see what you have.
