Chevy says use Mobil 1. Change it per your owners manual.

Mobil 1 synthetic oil.

It's the oil that the Corvette engineers selected and should be what you keep in it. The oil life monitor is a good indicator of the condition of your oil too; just make sure to zero it out upon change. Your manual also recommends change intervals.

I use Mobil 1 and change every 5,000 miles. Fluids are a cheap insurance to a healthy long lasting car.

I use AMSOIL, the original pure synthetic. I do change it annually even though you can run it for 25,000 miles without a change, as long as you change the filter every 12,000. Under independent testing it proved to be tops in the industry.
Just my 2 cents!

The factory fill is Mobil 1 Synthetic 5W-30. You can get a 6-quart case at Wal-Mart for around $18.50. I just purchased a case myself, although I'm curious as to whether I should use 10W-30 instead-- they tout that as being for higher-mileage cars, while they say 5W-30 is for keeping your car "running like new". Of course, this is marketing fluff, I realize, but my Vette has 61,000+ miles on it. I'm wondering if I should go with 10W-30 instead of the 5W-30. I probably makes very little difference, I'm guessing, but if anyone else has pondered the same question, I'm interested to hear...

Fred,
Come now, 61K miles is not high milage

I have a 90 that I used 5w30 in until it had about 100K then switched to 10w30.

No! No! Not high mileage, Tom! Higher mileage! I hope to have many, many miles to add to the 61K... Thanks for the info! I'll stick to the 5W-30 plan!

L8r,
Fred

If I amnot mistaken, the owners manual for my 99 says you can use 10-30 when temps are over 0. I usually don't drive my Vette when it is that cold, so I use 10-30 most of the time.

I switched over to RedLine at about 40,000mi. 10W-30.
At 100,000 I put Redline D4 ATF in the M6, and The Redline 75W-90 (I think) with limited slip additive in the rearend.
Up to 145,000 so far w/no apparent problems. I still get 64, 65 PSI when in the upper RPM's.

johnl,

did the redline D4 ATF make the shifting smoother?

Default 5W30 vs 10W30

I thought that I read somewhere that the 5W30 was needed for some cold start emission test and that 10W30 was fine for almost all circumstances. I will try to see where I saw that so that we can assess the validity of the source.

My 97 never had the noise and shifting problems I have seen posted on this board and others. So I did not notice any real significant difference. It does seem that the hump under the shifter is not as warm, but that may be only wishful thinking on my part.
I went to the redline products as there is a distribution center just across the Benicia bridge about 6 or 7 miles from my house. I’m a “homer”. Doing business with a local.

I use (and have always used) the 10W-30 Mobil 1 for one reason...I never lived in a place where the temperature dropped below zero.

The 5W-30 is for when the temp drops below zero. To my understanding it's a viscosity issue and nothing to do with passing emission tests.

I used Mobil 1 in my '86 and now in my '97 and change the oil about every 4k miles and the filter every 12k. I could probably change the oil less frequently but then what excuse would I have for spending time with my car?
