'zip Tie Mod'

I saw a reference to the zip-tie mod on Z06vette. Apparently most of the airbox is removed and the air filter is held in place with zip-ties. Has anybody done this? C4C5specialist- do you have an opinion on this? It seems like there would be little gain and some risk involved.

I think people use zip ties because the air cleaner cover hold downs pop loose. Mine always pop loose anything above about 85mph. I do not have a Z06 but have the Z06 air cleaner cover.

The mod involves taking the air cleaner cover off and using the zip ties to hold the air filter and filter carrier in place. The advantage is letting more air in since the entire filter is open to air instead of just what can get through the opening in the cover. As to any dangers I do not know the answer to that.

The danger has to do with letting water into the air intake. I hear the same criticism with 'ram air' and 'vortex' intakes. I have heard a couple of horror stories involving getting enough water in there to create hydro-lock of the engine.

As far as Hydrolock is concerned, it could happen. I don't think you are increasing your risk too much by doing this mod....no more than something like a Blackwing where the whole filter element is exposed. The bottom breathers(Vara-ram, Vortex, etc.) are at greater risk because the actual intake is closer to the ground. Hope this helps.

I have a EB Z06 like yours and have done the tie wrap mod and added the weatherstrip to the front hood opening. It may have been a series of factors, weather, getting more familiar with the car etc, but after doing the mod, my et's at Firebird dropped 2 tenths.

During a down pour (going to a club race) no water got on the filter until the hood was opened. This was in mixed driving up to 65 mph.

You would have to be in some very deep water to get water up that high. imho
