Default Seat Problem

Hello All!

I just got my 1991 Vette last weekend and we were cruising the other day and my wife went to adjust her seat and instead of moving, all it does it makes horrible sounds with any position of the switch.

The seat does not move, but no matter what way you slide the switch, the noises that come out under the seat sound horrible.

Please let me know what the pros here think it may be....

Thanks so much for your help!

LARRY

Not for sure but it sounds like somethings off track.Ive never had any experience in this but there are places that rebuild seat track assemblies. For a company to offer such a service I can only assume its a common problem.Sorry about your fascination with stangs Just teasin. Is that boss real?I have a fascination with eleanor, badddd.

Default Update

I just went outside and checked one more time.

When I push the button front or back (move the seat front or back) it makes the sound and does not move.

When I move the switch to the left and right (tilt) that works fine. Moves the seat just fine (tilts it).

Just wanted to make sure I had the right Information.

And yes, the Boss 302, Boss 429 and the Shelby are all completely legit from the factory cars. No Clones Here!

Thanks,

LARRY

The problem is most likely the seat track gears are toast. Mine did the same thing and there are no repair parts available. The only alternative is to order a rebuilt seat track from Ecklers or Mid-America and replace the old one. It is about $200 with core exchenge. I got mine from Mid-America in about two days and it is an easy job to install. The seat bottom lifts out after you find and depress the spring clip in the front bottom and then you can get at everything. The covers over the front seat anchors are a drive type plastic rivet and not a screw. They are re-usable if you are careful how you remove them. Be sure and pay attention where all the wiring and lumbar pump hoses are routed and connected. Took about two hours and three beers to complete. I believe there is a diagram of the seat assembly in the SEARCH section if you get into trouble. Have fun!!

Thanks again!

Larry,

there's a gearbox that's part of the seat track. It's the rivetet aluminum part that the 3 flex cables go into. The gears (which are plastic) are seperated by a molded plastic spacer which eventually cracks and allows the gears to misalign. Once misaligned, they start to strip, especially when moving the seat with someone sitting in it. The for/aft gears seem to fail first, but the up/down/tilt will eventually fail also.

I've had several apart and they were all broken in the same manner. I couldn't find a source to raplace either the entire gearbox or the guts. It's too bad because the rest of the track mechanism is pretty robust.

Default Thanks SR94

SR94,

Yes, that is the same thing I have found out. I talked with the people up at THE LAST DETAIL here in Georgia. They have a Corvette only service department and I was talking with the Service Mgr today. He says they replace about 8-10 seat track setups a week. They have a rebuilder who fixes the core. So, all the have to do is take out the unit, and bolt another in. Then they send the core in and have the stuff that needs fixing replaced.

So, I guess I will go that route.

Thanks so much for answering this question.
