A scattershield simply takes the place of the aluminum bell housing. Its purpose is to protect the car and the driver's legs in the case of an exploding clutch......usually occurs during racing. They are considerably heavier than the stock bell housing.

The block plate that redvetracr mentions goes between the scattershield and the rear of the engine block. Its purpose is to protect the engine in the case of a clutch explosion.

By the way, these are required in some classes of racing. Imagine, if you will, a heavy metal frisbee (spinning at several thousand rpm) slicing up through the floor and the dash and windshield and maybe your legs.

Kinda makes a scattershield seem like a good investment, doesn't it. :eek

I use one on my '67 that's going back on the street.
