Wiper sickness

Seldom get caught in the rain but...I did....wipers started out great then....they started to shutter so bad they caught each each other on their desend. Somehow they released and started to work but were still shuttering. I shut them off and drove in a downpour. Turned them back on and they seemed to settle down again. They are adjusted to where they should be. I don't know if the motor is the problem or what. The blades were replaced when this happened the last time, It didn't help. This always seems to happen after about 5 minutes after you start using them. I can live with it....I don't make it a habbit to drive the vette in the rain anyway. Just wondering if anyone would know what would cause this. Thanks!

I had this happen but on a totaly different car but wipers all work the same...it sound like the tension that is supposed to be put against the windsheild is not right...either someone bent the blades and they are not pressing against the windsheild enough or just the oposite...they are too tight against it....just a thought

I have the same problem. It happened when I was test driving in the rain (it had already been traveling on a car trailer all morning in the rain, so what the heck?). The wipers caught each other and then one flipped up and the end of it scraped on the windshield. I looked later and the windshield is scratched there. The dealer's shop bent the arms and it works a little better. There's probably one position that works well and I haven't found it yet.

Wipers start out good but end up chattering so bad and clashing it's unbearable. One fix that can stop them from clashing is to get an inch or two shorter drivers blade. I've found this is good for alleviating the clashing incident's, which look great at a stoplight, the wipers all splayed out. I use rain-x and try not to use the wipers too much unless absolutely necessary. I've read that new arms might help as would a windshield cleaned with a mild abrasive like soft scrub. I'll take my chances with rain-x as the wipers are very inconsistent. Replacing blades seems to do little either. If anybody out there has a real world fix, please respond to this thread

I've had the wipers pull that stunt on me too.I brought the car in for some servicing and they told me that they changed the blades.I had used the wipers 4 times in all before bringing the car in for that work.I haven't had any problems lately but then again I haven't used them in years.....last time I used them it was for a 9 minute ride home.....man was it scary to have them act up like that.

It is scary...and it's kinda stupid for a car of this caliber to have such a problem. The pressure of the wiper on the windshield seems fine. The rain-x works great. I do use it. Interesting to see a lot of people have the same problem. I like the idea of the shorter wiper, I just may try this if there is no other solution.

Yes my 89 does the same thing the wipers will hit and bind up with each other then come off of the windsheild and bang down on it again from time to time. Very weird, but I did have an adjustment done by the dealer a few years back and it hasn't done it since (Knock on wood!)

Wax on the windshield will cause wiper chatter. Sometimes straight windshield washer fluid (the plain blue stuff with methanol antifreeze) can clean the wax off of the blades. But if the glass is loaded with wax, the wipers will continue to chatter.
The ultimate solution is to clean the glass with a glue remover containing Xylene then put on new blades (or at least clean the blades with the solvent). 3m glue remover works but costs about $12 a pint. Most hardware stores sell 'Xylol' which is a mixture of xylene and alcohol and it works well at $3 or so a pint.
Xylene and Methanol aren't good for the body, so if you try this do it outside. Gloves will help but xylene (and maybe methanol) will go right thru most gloves. Use a thick cloth and leave enough dry to grab onto.
Also assure that all loosenes in the wiper linkage is removed.

hmmm...wiper linkage? How would one go about tightening the linkage? Glass is clean. I did the adjustment and seem to have that correct. Loose linkage could be the problem. Thanks for input!
