Default Remote oil filter?

Remote oil filters: good idea, bad idea, or just personal preference?

And, a follow-up question: since most of these units have 3/4-16 threads for the filter (instead of the 13/16-16 threads that the small block oil filter uses), what's a good filter to use, with 3/4 thread diameter?

hi joe,
i dont have a relocated filter, yet. like the idea but with the tight engine compartment....i dont know if my shoehhorn is strong enough. I was considering this change along with a thermostat controlled oil cooler (with braided lines for looks). as far as threads on the adapter, ive never really checked but in the catalogs i have (summit,jegs,paw...etc) they usually have some filters next to the ad for the remote oil filters
good luck and let me know how it turns out
ps does any one have any experience with the thermostat controlled oil coolers?
thank mike

Well, I decided to go for it. I can't think of any compelling reason to do it, or not to: I just think it's cool, and should make oil changes easier.

I'm mounting an oil cooler between the radiator and the A/C condenser, over on the left-hand side. I'm also installing an electric fan, so the fan shroud is going bye-bye. So, I'm going to fabricate a bracket out of some aluminum that I have, and connect it to the radiator support, to hang the filter behind the radiator.

Without the shroud, there is plenty of room, which will make filter changes easy. It will also put the filter in the airflow at speed, which can't hurt (especially compared to being right under the block, near the exhaust). And, since it will be at the highest point in the oil lines that will go forward to the cooler, I'm going to install a T fitting with a small valve, to let me bleed out any air that might get trapped in the lines during an oil change.

I'm going to have a filter on the right-hand side for the transmission. So, having another filter on the left-hand side will look better than only having the one.
