Museum Plans Expansion to Commemorate Corvette’s Next 50 Years

Bowling Green, KY
- The National Corvette Museum Board of Directors at its April 26, 2003 meeting authorized the commencement of fundraising for a building expansion anticipated to approximately double the size of the Museum. The Board mandated that funding for the expansion must come exclusively from donations.

Chairman of the Board Mike Yager stated, “The Museum has made tremendous progress over the last few years in reducing its debt and strengthening itself financially. Even greater progress has been made in strengthening its relationship with the Corvette community. This is an exciting step in fulfilling the mission of the Museum --- the preservation of the past, present and future of Corvette. We will now be able to add to that the Museum serving as a research and resource center as this strengthens the Museum’s ability to serve as a repository of Corvette materials.

Preliminary architectural drawings which will enhance the contemporary landmark design of the Museum will be officially unveiled in June 2003, as part of the Museum’s celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Corvette. Fundraising goals will also be announced at that time. The addition will include a permanent library/archives, the Corvette Hall of Fame, a café, a Museum Delivery area for cars, a banquet/exhibition hall, offices and additional storage.

Corvette Marketing Director, Rick Baldick, stated “Corvette has a splendid history of achievements over the last 50 years, what a terrific opportunity for supporters and enthusiasts to help build the place which will pay tribute to America’s Sports Car’s next 50 years.”

Detailed plans will be unveiled at the Museum during Corvette’s 50th Anniversary Celebration in June 2003. Museum Executive Director Wendell Strode said “The fundraising campaign will provide the opportunity for every member of the Corvette community to participate and contribute. This includes individuals, clubs, aftermarket businesses and corporations. Naming opportunities for different sections of the building will also be developed.”

The National Corvette Museum is a non-profit foundation dedicated to educating the public through the preservation of the Corvette’s past, present and future heritage. Open daily 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. CT, the Museum is located at Exit 28 off I-65 in Bowling Green, KY. www.corvettemuseum.com
