View Full Version : recommend muffler?
hi,
My '81 vette needs a new muffler - and I'm going to replace both while I'm at it. (it has the original mufflers on it)
Any recommendations of mufflers to buy? I'm looking for a little performance but not too much noise.
thanks,
Kurt

Flowmaster 50 series, good sound, reasonable price. Not chrome, but they look ok.

i want to put flowmaster 40s or 50s on my 81 but my exhaust guy says that it is a waste of money since the 81 is a single exhaust and the flowmasters work best on dual exhaust. is he right and has anyone put 40s or 50s on their 81?

In your original post, you said you were going to replace both mufflers.
Now your exhuast guy says you have a single exhust?
I didnt know the 81's came with a single exhuast.

I didnt know the 81's came with a single exhuast. The 81 Vette came out of the factory with 2 into 1 (cat) then back to 2 exhaust pipes and mufflers. Not true dual exhaust

I am a new post just using the same string.....so, has anyone replaced their mufflers on an 81 and have it make a difference?

Mufflers by themselves on a stock 81 will give you little if any performance gains. If you are going to replace your cat. conv. with a high perf free flow type you might notice some minimal gain. I have true duals(no cats) with 40 series Flowmasters. Now you are talking some performance gains (about 30 hp). Emission regulations in your area may prevent you from doing this modification however. 40 series Flowmasters are a bit on the loud side,50 series are softer. Mid-America offers a performance bolt on free flow catalytic converter for $150. In your case,if you want to keep the original converter I wouldn't go hog wild with some expensive muffler. For example...A pair of turbo mufflers from Mid-America $89.99.

thanks, I think I will leave well enough alone as our emission standards have become quite strict in the last year or two
I replaced mine about 2 years ago from the headers back. I went with a high flow converter and DynoMax Super Turbo mufflers from Mid-America. Noticed a slight performance gain and a nice rumble, but not so loud that you couldn't hear the stereo - either in town or on the highway. A friend of mine has Flowmasters(not sure which ones) on his 74 and the interior resonance is terrible. Can hardly carry on a conversation when cruising. I guess it all depends on what sound your looking for. Check with a local club to get an idea of what various systems sound like and see if that helps you may a more informed decision, Later Zane

thanks
I've got DynoMax Ultra's on mine. But I also have headers, a free flow cat with 3" stainless all the way back. The throaty rumble is right around 1500-1700 rpm. A nice sound that has gotten a little louder as I got them broken in. Increase in performance not really noticeable, but true duals will be put on this month. That should be more noticeable. Get a little rumble, don't put the stock back on. My DynoMax mufflers needed no "modifications" to the exhaust system for a perfect fit. I've heard that some Flowmaster muff's will. Maybe somebody can expound on that topic for you.
Good luck................ Nut
