Default egr shield

This might be a dumb question, but I will ask anyways. I just purchased a new foil shield for my egr pipe. The foil shield had a couple gm part number stickers on it. In order to remove them I did what I always do to remove stickers, I used hot water to loosen the glue. The stickers came off alright but so did this blueish tint plastic wrap that appears to cover the whole shield on the foil side. I assumed it was just a packageing wrap. Does this serve a purpose or is it just a protective package wrap?

I'm sure if it was just thin plastic film it was used to protect it until installed. The EGR gets very hot and would melt.
