View Full Version : Getting rid of electronic engine controls - need advice

I've decided to dump the electronic engine controls and all of the pollution equipment on my 81. There's no pollution check in WV and none on the horizon.

I'm not looking for anything radical, just want some additional hp. I've already added a dual exhaust and alum rad with SPALs. I'm changing to a Carter 625 cfm carb, Edelbrock Performer ESP intake, Headman headers, increasing compression with a different head gasket and possibly a cam swap with roller rockers.

What I need is some help with is ignition options. What have you guys used for an ignition that was a painless swap when you've gone the route I'm going.

Jon - I see this was posted previously. I will be doing the same change you are considering when I install the GM 330hp crate motor in the next year or 2. Until then,I am happy with the performance of the stock set-up.

Dave has hooked you up with an excellent thread and there are several more if you care to search for them. All you need is a 1980 style HEI vacuum advance distributor. My pick is Accel, but any of the brand names are equal or better(Mallory, Moroso, or Taylor) all a matter of how much you want too spend. I would also recommend the HEI Super coil and matched high voltage cap/rotor. Top it off with a good set of 8mm spirial wound high temperture silicone wires if you are planning headers.

I did what Dale suggested a couple years back, used the Accel Blueprint series HEI vacuum advance distributor, Super Coil and went with MSD 8.5mm wires. Haven't had a problem so far.
