Have you checked your clutch fluid level?

Default Where does your pedal START to dis engage

the clutch... and is it easier to put the car in 1st THEN shift into reverse?

You might have Clutchsslaveiscylinderspoopenoutenosis.

I'll find a post.

When you say "hard to shift into reverse" do you mean the effort required to push the lever, or that it doesn't move into reverse.
If it is the latter, pull the lever back to the neutral gate, let out on the clutch, then depress the clutch, allow the gears to spin down, (about 2-3 seconds) then try to put it into reverse again.
Remember reverse isn't a syncromeshed gear, so it may not "align" on the first try if the car is completly static.
You may have to do this a couple of times once in a while, the gears are like a slot machine in that you don't get a winner everytime...lol.

Default I somewhat agree...

However.. this symptom USUALLY happens when the owner has been used to a pattern of operation for a while.. then the first signs of failure occour when the clutch doesn't QUITE dis engage enough.. allowing the input shaft to have some pre load on it.. and making it tough to get into reverse.

I'll bet the farm that the clutch pedal dis engages completely VERY near the floor.. which is not right.. and is the first sign of the dreaded

Clutchsslaveiscylinderspoopenoutenosis.

Now with the advances of modern wrenchology ( found only here @ the CAC).. it is a treatable disease and most paitents have 100% recovery...Well except for NYERGA.. who had a complication of OverheadisClucthsthrowout forkus.

Which was cured.

vigman,
You posts are always infomative and in the case of the most recent... entertaining too...
Yes, your 100% correct, if this is a new problem, then I would also suspect the clutch not completly disengaging caused simply from age/mileage/use.
Kind of like we feel sometimes...age/mileage/use...

Default Yes that is a bad thing

But you will find with a sever case of mastercylinderitis... a complication of Damnusclipus sprunggin up innen dasshin

This can cause sever outbursts of yelling followed by convulsions with wild thrashing due to blood loss from legs being elevated to long while the person is under dash.

In extreme cases, you get
Clipus pokin in the eyein.

Stop! I'm suffering from crakenmeuppen!

Actually, I've also had the hard-reverse problem where it'll sometimes grind REALLY bad when shifting into reverse with the engine on, or not go at all with it off. Sometimes shifting to third and back to reverse helps, but not all the time. Had master and slave cylinders replaced about a year ago; car was doing it before and after. Replaced the lockout rod and it helped, but the problem came back later.

Stop! I'm suffering from crakenmeuppen!

this affliction is caused by
Hosen not bleddin correc-0-ostomy

... I think you have the same affliction ( but a slightly different strain ) then Len had.

Now push the pedal.. and tell the Dr. where the clutch disengages.

Vig-

I have decided(and the power has been vested in me) to make you a full fledged Doctor Vetteinensis Honoris Causa. That is an honorary Doctor of Vetteology for those whose Latin is a little rusty. I took my baby out for a run today and depressed the clutch pedal all the way and no problem getting her into reverse. The clutch was redone about 10K ago at 42,000 mi. I will check the fluid as well. Your help and good humor is always appreciated!

Doc

It's bad enough I have to work in NYC!
I will never live there because you can't have a stop light Grand Prix in Manhattan.

Hm. Dr. Vig - drove to work this morning, playing with the clutch pedal. It appears to disengage about half-way to the floor (at that point, the car feels like it's coasting and I can shift w/out graunching). Still has issues going into reverse.

Default Really?

Hmmmm, couple of things to check.. shifter linkage ( clean, lubed bushings all there, shifter arms on tranny tight?).

Get under the car and watch from below as the linkage is moved by an assistant.

Will the car have a hard time getting in reverse with the engine off, clutch in?
