Ignition key

Friend of mine just bought a '99. He was given a key that does not have a chip in it. I told him I thought the car would not run if it does not have the chip. (ON my Y2K both keys have the chip.) Does the C5 come with a 3rd ("chipless") key to open the doors/trunk? Will the car run without this chip in the key?

I have a 1999 C5 coupe. To start the car, it requires a key with the VATS chip in it. Soon after I bought the car, I received a plastic pre-cut "courtesy key" (to carry in my wallet) from GM/dealer in the mail that would unlock the car door, but not start the car. Maybe that is what your friend has.
