TPI bracket replacement
I've seen several discussions of TPI conversion, which talk about replacing the accessory brackets. I'm a little confused: the only bracket which I can see attaching to the intake manifold is the back brace for the A/C compressor. Is this brace different enough between the TPI and carb manifolds that it cannot be modified? Can it simply be replaced with one from a TPI car, or is the compressor in a different location?
If all else fails, I can't see replacing the whole bracket system over that brace - surely a replacement can be fabricated.

Joe,
The problem is that the old style brackets often cause the belt or some other part of the old carb set up to interfere with the throttle body and air cleaner mounting.
Plus, you need a C4 accessory bracket assembly due to the short water pump. So, although a F body will work, the C4 brackets give you more room, and of course fit around the throttle body.

OKAY -
V-belts versus Serpentine....
You can use the stock small block, C3 V-belts with the L98 TPI.
However the AIR pump will not clear the TPI throttle body. Thats where the brackets will present a problem.
LTx will not work like the L98 as the water pump is cam driven and NOTHING will line up for V-belts..

Hmmm... I ain't gots me one of them thar smog pumps...
Just P/S, A/C, and Alternator. Am I good, with those and the '88 TPI setup that I'm getting, or do I really need the newer-style brackets? Or is this a case where I need to just get the TPI, test-fit it, and see if I need the brackets?

So as long as you have the STOCK AC, PS, and alternator L98 TPI will bolt down directly and PERFECTLY in terms of the belts not hitting the air cleaner. Now, if you have a flex fan.... you'll have contact between the 6 inch tappered cone K&N filter and the fan.
This one will throw you though- at least it did me for a while!
The water hose.....
You'll need to measure the distance from the inlet on the TPI manifold to the radiator hose. I use a 5.0L Mustang GT's hose shortened to fit.
Ahhhhhh... the little ankle bitters that make a custom job a pain!!!
