Default Backfire!!!!!!!

Hi Folks!
Looking for some feedback! I have a loud backfire that happens after I let off the accellerator after coming out of the hole, it happens right after the shift into 2nd after I let up on the accellerator. I have gutted cats, the car is running real strong and my speed is 62 MPH when I leave up on the gas, then the back fire happens. Question? Is this due to the unburned fuel that the cats have not burned off? Or is it another problem? Car seems to be running fine otherwise, never had this problem when the cats were hooked up. Could it be that the computer now is running the engine too rich? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Check for an exhaust leak. Since you were just working with the cats, it may be that it's not quite sealed at the couplings. If oxygen gets in there, it will cause backfires.

Probably an exhaust leak.. I would think but could be wrong exhaust mods would create more air flow which means a leaner exhaust.. I just put gutted cats on mine got a sweet deal for 40$ and no problems yet.. kept the old ones for emissions time.. so I'm running.. hooker super comp shorty headers, gutted cats, no resonator and just the stock mufflers sounds very tough I love it and it crackles a bit on decell, but no serious back fire or anything... BTW Charles (Wookiebear) thanks again for the 3.07's I love em may have to go higher yet.. I'm also running a 2600 vigilante conveter oh and btw my trans rebuild went great with the trans go shift kit it shifts nice.. quick and firm.. I think I got it right this time.. anyway good luck whith trying to find this backfire issue.. it may just be a side effect of the exhaust mods.. or a leak as we said..

This can also be a symptom of leaky injectors.

I had this problem too....turned out I needed to add some timing to the car.

That took away the problem, but it came back and I then found I had 2 leaking injectors.

Today I put in my ford 24lb svo injectors so all should be well.

so i'de do a leakdown test on the injectors (can be done with fuel pressure guage) and double check your timing and look for exhaust leaks

good luck!
