? ID my engine, please...

CAC member Jack suggested I post this information here.

Jack advised me of where to locate the stamped ID number and I think I have located it.

Front of block, passenger side under head. I was expecting the numbers to be stamped on the front of the engine, but these were facing up towards me (and my trusty flashlight) from a protruding part of the upper engine block or lower head, directly behind/under the wide support bracket and AC unit.

Thank you for anything you can tell me about this engine. Purchased from GM approx. 5 years ago. Mechanic recently advised me it was a 4 bolt main.
I know NOTHING else about it. Installation mechanic lost receipt.

I've racked my brain and book collection trying to find information with those numbers, so I took my search to the net, came across this. From the below diagram and the blurb below can you give more details?



The diagram above shows where each of the casting identifiers is located on the engine. (1) shows the location of the HEAD CASTING NUMBERS and the HEAD CASTING DATE located under the valve covers, in the rocker arm valley. (2) shows the position of the BLOCK CASTING DATE on the rear ledge of the block near the bell housing mounting surface. If you have an early big block or a late model smallblock, the BLOCK CASTING DATE may be on the passenger side of the engine block, (see 2A), instead of the rear ledge of the block. Some smallblock blocks may also have the BLOCK CASTING DATE on the driver's side of the block. (3) indicates the position of the BLOCK CASTING NUMBER. Later blocks may also have the size of the engine displacement in liters listed at (3). (4) indicates the position of the ENGINE ASSEMBLY DATE/SUFFIX CODE and partial VIN code information on the front of the block. (5) on the rear flange of the block, on the drivers side near the oil filter pad, is an alternate block location for some VIN codes. (6) indicates the sides of the block where some blocks may have the size of the motor indicated in cubic inches or in liters. The last three numbers of the block casting number may also be repeated in this location.

Heidi- If that is a GM replacement crate engine in your car,you will not be able to find any info in regards to the engine serial number. Been there tried that with tech advisors at GM Partech. If that is the GM #10067353 stock replacement engine I have a complete parts break down of every part in that engine at work. They were all 4 bolt mains (10067353). If you are interested,email me a fax# and I will send it to you.

I'll ask Kenny about the fax, our printer is supposed to have that capability, but I have yet to see it deliver.

I am pretty sure my motor came out of Mexico and it is a GM Goodwrench motor.
At the time I ordered it, I was very Corvette un-educated and just requested a replacement engine similar to the one that was already in it.
As earlier stated, I don't have that receipt so I don't know what the number was.

Billybob, I think you could be right about your # info guess...I did purchase the engine about mid-summer. (July or August) After purchase and shipping, I shipped the 78 to my mechanic about August or September and he did the R&R of the engines and I picked up the completed project in December. He did the work after hours and on some weekends. The timing sounds about right.

I'll still check around in daylight for any other numbers I can find.
