My Corvette(s):
Default L82 Indentification

Hi.
I am currently shopping for a 78-82 with an L82 engine. How can I tell if really IS an L82? Are there certain numbers stamped in the block? Are there certain parts that would indicate an L82? I mean, the VIN tag may say the car was built with an L82, but how can I confirm that the engine that is now in the car is an L82?
Any tips/ help would be much appreciated.

L82 only available in 78-80 in the years you are looking for. If the VIn checks out and it says it was built with an L82 then you need to look at the machined pad on the front passengers side of the motor just below the head. The last 6 digits of the VIN should be stamped on that pad along with a 3 letter code that will also ID it as bein an L82. Hope this helps.

Default L82 engine codes

78- (CMR) and (CMS) 79- (ZBA) and (ZBB) 80- (ZBD) and (ZBC).the 5th digit in the vin for a 78- L82 would be 'H',79- '4',80- '6'. The 3 letter code can be found below the RF cylinder head on a flat machined surface.
