Here's what I know. 3782870 , 327 cu. in used 1962-65 all horsepowers. H184 - Block casting date - H - August, 184 - 18th day, 1964. S102357 - the last 7 digits of the S/N of the car that the engine was originally installed into. The first 5 are 40837 Coupe 40867 Conv. FO824HD- engine assembly date F- Flint plant 0824 August 24th. I'm having trouble with the HD but I'll keep looking. Could the HD really be RD?? If so, 300 HP manual trans. Hope this helps.

I concur with rbyrne, with the following caveats:

The "S" at the start of the partial VIN indicates St Louis assembly plant, and since the relatively low serial number means the engine block was likely allocated to a '65 vehicle, the "HD" (if it's really that) could possibly be a 327ci powerglide engine for a full-size passenger car... what I don't know is whether full-size vehicles were built in the St Louis assembly plant. The "102357" serial Vette would have been built in mid-November, which in turn means the engine sat quite a long time after it was assembled until the date it was used (although there was a strike in October and no vehicles were assembled that month). The same serial would have been built much sooner if it were a passenger car.

So, a lot depends on that last suffix on the block stamping: is it "RD" (Corvette) or "HD" (passenger car)?

More confusion. According to Chevrolet by the Numbers 1960-64, both Passenger cars and Corvette were built in St. Louis. Pass. cars referring to full sized cars (I'm guessing) The engine code of RD is described as 327, 300, Manual Trans. HD (Heavy Duty Obviously). I can't find any engine suffix HD for any car line but I'll keep looking.

More... '64 engine suffixes all started with R or S. In '65 all suffixes started with H. Could the D be something else?? Now we know the engine came from a '65.

HD was the suffix for the L79 327/350 hp in the '66 and '67 Corvettes but that isn't consistant with the 870 casting number.

But you didn't say 300 horsepower.

(I noticed that after I already posted and re-read the thread.)
