Default Tips from a grocery cashier.

Well I just want to vent out after a long day at work/school. If you have been wondering on how to get out of the grocery store faster read these tips.

1. Please do not talk on your cell phones during the purchase. Not only does not allow you to keep an eye on the prices but it may hold up the line longer.

2. Keep like things together. Simple as that. I dislike it when I see cold items mixed with all cans and bags.

3. Put produce up first if possible. Reason begin is that it takes time to input the code and count or weigh the items. If you think it would get crushed just tell the cashier to put the produce to the side.

4. Tell the cashier if you have any big/heavy items. Some stores have a scan gun or have the UPC codes already tagged on the keyboard. Not only would this save you and the cashier/bagger back pains but it would speed up the process.

5. Have your form of payment ready to be used. Often times I do not like when people are not ready and take about another one to two minutes just looking for their card or check book.

6. Try to be nice to the bagger and cashier. We are humans too. At the store where I work we are required to ask if everything was a okay and if anything else is needed. This is because we are showing you respect.

Well I may have more tips soon. Have a good night everyone!

All good tips!

But may I suggest one to the cashier...

Please put the coins from my change in my hand first so that I may put them in my pocket. Then give me the bills and receipt. When you put the bills in my hand and the coins on top it is more difficult for me to stow my change.

I do that but I do know what you mean. It sucks have your change roll off.

Chopsticks, I did a two and a half year stint at a convenience store while I was going to college as a full time student. UGH!

I try to remember what it's like to be on the other side of that counter when I'm going through the line.

Thanks for reminding me.

I love their faces when I point out that the light for express is still on. Then they say oh I am sorry. Begin the nice person I am I let them go on.

I got a very dirty look and a mutter from a customer when I took a loaded cart through the express lane - but that customer wasn't present when the cashier motioned me to her empty lane. So as a fellow customer, give the benefit of the doubt to those already in front of you when you walk up...

Another tip - please make sure you actually HAVE YOUR FORM OF PAYMENT WiTH YOU before getting in line. This has happened to me a couple times recently where I'll wait behind someone buying a ton of stuff only to have them exclaim (after searching their purse/wallet for 5 mins) that they must have left their credit card at home. So sorry! Bye! Wastes my time, wastes the cashier's time, wastes the stocker's time.

Something that I see at my store here in Texas is that on Sunday before 12 PM (the legal hour to buy any alcohol) people would buy a cart full of beer and wine thinking they could get away.

Good subject Chopstix

You can add this to your list too..

If you find an item without a barcode or price on it, take a second and see if another one has a barcode or price on it, if not REMEMBER the isle and approx location you got the item, so the Others Waiting In Line don't have to stand there for 10 minutes while you act stupid and expect the cashier to Know the price or where YOU found the item

Personally I like the Self Checkout when only buying a few items

Adding to this: At most stores the UPC number from the product will be on the price sticker as well. Match the last 3 digits together and there you go. Better yet get a marker and write the price on a clear part of the can or package. I hate it when a customer says a price is wrong and holds the line up for 10 min while I call the department up.

In addition to sorting my perishables from my frozen goods, I also put things on the belt UPC code down.
So all they have to do is grab and swipe the item and put it in the bag. It save a lot of time.

This is the best time saver tip I have ever found while checking out at the grocery store. Have 'her' do all the grocery shopping.

On the flip side I do all the cooking so it works for us.

Here's a real tip for those self checker lanes. If you are buying produce that doesnt have a UPC on it make a note of what the PLU code is. That way when checking out you dont have to get the number from the cashier.

I guess I'm one of those guys that aggravate you Chopsticks. If I'm forced to go to the grocery store, I get what I have to have (even more if I'm hungry) and quickly put everything on the conveyer belt as quickly as possible and try to get the heck out of there. I have no idea where the scan code is or if it even exist. I really don't care if they bag it in plastic, paper or tie it up with twine as long as I can get it to the car and then to the kitchen. I guess I'm a "bad" customer. Sorry.

99.5% of the time the store will have the PLU number on the produce sign. Roma tomatoes are 4087 a simple to remember code.
