Anyone know if you could get a 265 V8 in a 57 chevy 2 dr hardtop? I thought in 57 chevy was using the 283 V8!
Thanks,
Craig

"1957 was the first year that Chevrolet ever offered fuel injection (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuel_injection) as an option. A 283 in³ engine fitted with solid lifters and fuel injection was rated at 283 hp (211 kW). "

Yeah I saw that to. I wonder by offered do they mean that it was an option over the other V8, or it was the only V8.

I'm gonna have to narrow it down somehow. I know for corvettes, I have a black book, and for firebirds I have a red book. I would imagine somewhere there is documentation.

I have nothing to document this but over the yrs I have heard a couple diff. stories.
The first is that the 283 was an option in 57.
The second comes from arguments with hobby stock racers in the late 60s early 70s. Many were still running the 55 to 57s and the 56 crowd said that some 56 chevys came out with the 283 because they ran out of the 265. They argued that they should under the stock engine rule be able to run the 283 engine. ;shrug

Back in the 1990s, I helped restore a 57 coupe which had a 265 ci engine. The owner said it was 100% factory. As part of the restoration, he had a local machine shop rebuild the engine and, as luck would have it, they lost the mounting brackets for the alternator and power steering pump... which proved hard to replace.

Thanks for the info. The guy selling it said that there were 265's leftover after the 56 run so they were used in early 57's. I will have to check the engine suffix codes, and other numbers to verify.

As you can see from both charts the 1957 265 was an 8.0:1 cr 2 bbl engine. They did come in '57s but I don't think they were offered for the whole production year. I knew one of these cars personally. It was a white over mint green 210 2 door post with a Powerglide. In the back of my mind I'm thinking that they were not available in Bel Airs but I could be wrong. Most '57 with V8s had the 283 in either the 8.0:1 cr 2bbl (with a flat rectangle marking on the end of the head) or the 9.5:1 Power Pak 4 bbl engine with an pyrimid on top of the flat rectangle on the head. Both the Bel Air and 210 were available in a 2 dr hardtop. The 150, 210 and Bel Air were all available in a 2 dr post.
I have a box of left over '57 engine stuff down stairs including a 283 1957 pan and clutch inspection cover. I have a set of original rods too and a '57 dated 4 bbl intake. Also some other odds and ends. Might have a Carter WCFB with '57 dates too.

It's my understanding that the 57's with the 265's got a silver "V" on the trunk lid, and that the ones with the 283's got a gold "V". That's the way my buddies and I learned to distinguish them.

Actually, they identified the models. The Bel Airs had the gold 'V's and script and the 210's (which I had one of) got the chrome 'V' and script. The BA also had gold grille, gold fender louvers, long tail chrome, and a different dash design. A Bel Air w/265 or a 6 cyl still had gold trim, whereas a 210 w/283 would still have chrome.
