Members of the Central Illinois Corvette Club do more than cruise in their beloved sports cars and talk shop.

The organization has a strong charitable component as well.

For years, the club has done fundraising for the Spina Bifida Association of Illinois, said Shari Andrew, Central Illinois Corvette president.

This holiday season, club members wanted to expand their charitable efforts so they decided to donate to Friend-in-Deed, The State Journal-Register charity.

"We have a club member who works at the (newspaper) and another who volunteers (for the program) each year at distribution time, and they were instrumental in our decision to contribute to Friend-in-Deed, along with the fact that Friend-in-Deed benefits many folks this time of year who may otherwise not have a good holiday," Andrew said.

That generosity translated into $500 for the not-for-profit organization.

The money was raised in May during the club's annual car show.

After 33 years of catering to the owners of Corvettes and Chevrolets, this year's show, which partnered with Friendly Chevrolet, opened participation to all makes and models, including motorcycles, Andrew said. There was an entry fee of $10 to $12 to enter the show, as well as a 50/50 drawing.

"Half of the proceeds go to (paying for) the car show and half go to charity," she explained.

The Spina Bifida Association also received $500.

Andrew said she thinks her club will continue to donate to Friend-in-Deed.
The Central Illinois Corvette Club has 76 members, made up of singles and couples ranging in age from 27 through 76.

"Those of us who are middle-aged, a lot of us have the grandkids and even great-grandkids, and it would break our hearts if they weren't going to have a Christmas," Andrew said.

Friend-in-Deed provides gifts of food, clothing and toys to needy families. The delivery date is Saturday, Dec. 22.

The 2007 campaign aims to raise $265,000. The 17th annual Friend-in-Deed golf outing Sept. 6 contributed an estimated $75,000 toward that goal.

Last year, the charity raised more than $323,000 and helped 2,652 families.

Contributions can be mailed to Friend-in-Deed, P.O. Box 142, Springfield, IL 62705-0142, or dropped off at the newspaper's front desk. A donation form is on this page; forms also can be printed at www.sj-r.com (http://www.sj-r.com).
