Well, I did a 6-hour round trip yesterday to bring her home. Purred like a kitten. ;)

You can see the undercoating on the firewall. It sure seems to have paid off as there is very minimal rust on the fenders at the top of the wheel opening. Rockers are like new. Cab corners are good with only spot rust.

This is a rebuilt 5.7L 40,000km (25,000 miles) ago.

The chrome plating is flaking at the top of the grill.

60/40 split. The whole interior is in very, very good condition.

EDIT: The more I look at it, I don 't think it's a 60/40 bench. I guess it's bucket seats with a flip up armrest that doubles as another seat. ;shrug

It's a 1989 Chevy Silverado K1500 4x4 automatic (O/D) with A/C, heady-duty suspension, Reese hitch, etc. and almost everything works.

I've got a few changes in mind. :D

All due respect to this ol' girl, but the '89 will be gone in a flash when I find the right '67-'72 pickup. ;)

Right now, I'm just fitting in with the local townsfolk. Gotta get me a gun-rack. :D

I was pleasantly surprised that this 5.7L 350 got just over 20 mpg (Imperial gallons), so approx. 16 mpg (U.S.) on the highway. The previous owner gave me detailed maintenance records that help explain why it runs so well. Although it is a 4x4, I had no need to engage it. It also has the factory O/D automatic that drops the revs way down. :upthumbs

Looks like it is in very good shape, Bob. I could use one of those, myself.

It was undercoated when new and I think that has made all the difference. Also, those stepside fenders are fibreglass.

Went to my local garage for a safety this afternoon. All it needs are rear tires (replacing all four anyway), front pads and rotors, and a new gas tank (the seller told me it was leaking when over 3/4 full). :beer

http://i1.tinypic.com/6wzmuro.jpg

How's that for good rockers? That's dirt and leaves from the 3-hour trip home.

http://i18.tinypic.com/71n1ath.jpg

http://i3.tinypic.com/6ofcu2o.jpg

The tires come tomorrow, but here's what the new wheels will look like....

http://i9.tinypic.com/8381eev.jpg

After the safety, I'll take it to my body guy (Corvette painter) and have new front fenders ($98 each) installed, some minor rust repairs done and a fresh spray of Olympic White.

Since I like my Z-71 Tahoe so much, I'll paint the grill and mirrors white too.....maybe even the bumpers. ;)

BTW This ones for sale. He's calling it a '67 but it has side markers. Could be a sheet metal change. You can fill them when you change it to red.

This reminds me of a lesson which I learned vicariously. A buddy of mine does automotive restorations as his form of active retirement. His shop truck got back into in the yard so he decided to fix it up. He spent hours with a dolly and hammer, pounding the fender back into shape. Then he carefully smoothed it out and primered it. All tolled, he put about two days on it. :ugh

When he went to the local supplier to buy paint, the guy ahead of him in line bought a fender for the same year & model of truck for $75. I was at the shop when he got back with the paint... :chuckle

If you count your time worth anything and the replacement parts are good quality, it's almost never worth it to try to fix things as opposed to swapping them.

Craig, the Blazers/Suburbans stayed with the older body style until 1991, and then updated in 1992.

This truck is in very good shape, just like the PO promised. I got a look at the complete underside today and the floors and bed bottom still show the thick undercoating that sure did its job. Very, very solid!!! It has 219,000 km (131,000 miles) on it. The original unused Firestone spare is underneath.

Here is how it looks with the new wheels and tires on it.

http://i14.tinypic.com/8eic35s.jpg

Next stop, is the body shop that painted my Corvette. Kurt and Ron will work their magic. And, I've got a few subtle paint and emblem ideas to make it "mine". ;)

Although the small amount of rust above the front wheels could easily be patched, I'm opting for new fenders.

I got new license plates on it today, after it passed the safety check (tail light circuit board, one marker light bulb, license plate light wire, front rotors, calipers and pads) and air emissions check (absolutely nothing required to pass).

I'm spending a bit of money on it now. However, I did get it free. :upthumbs

Since you are putting a painted front bumper on it have you looked at the multitude of custom paintable grilles with billit inserts that are available for your truck? You could switch to composite headlights and use a grill for the 454 SS truck. But waite...don't do that. I have a complete set of headlights for your truck that you need to buy from me for spares. My wife's dad had a '88 stepside once and bought headlights because they were hard to find in that size at times.

No, no, no billet inserts. No composite headlights. I'm staying with "glass" twin halogen headlights. Those composites get real foggy looking from scratches.

I'm doing this :W trying to get LMC to ship $1,800 worth of parts to me. It's been almost 6 days now, and they can't even get around to calculating the shipping costs. :eyerole Unbelieveable. :mad A few minutes ago, I called (for the 4th time) and asked if an elf at the north pole was writing it all out in longhand. :bash

That's interesting. I have bought from LMC with no problem before. I wonder if they don't know where Canada is? You know how our education system is these days. Political ideology is taught over practical sciences and geography.

You make a good point on the lamps. My son's were almost opaque when we bought it. I sanded and polished them so that light would at least get through the lens again. As for the small seal beam headlights, I'll bring them along to CruiseFest and make you an offer that you can't refuse. ;)

Now that I've wasted a week, looks like I'll be canceling the order and going elsewhere. :mad

Tom Bryant
12-15-07, 04:52 AM
What did you order?

67HEAVEN
12-15-07, 07:56 AM
Tom. I ordered a paintable grill, fold-in outside paintable mirrors, paintable outside door handles, full body mouldings, all new emblems, power window and power door lock kits, replacement cloth headliner and cloth visors, inside and outside door window seals, gauge bezel, bumper impact strips, diamond clear bumper lights and side marker lenses, and plenty more.

The whole idea is to go for the monochrome paint look like my Z-71 Tahoe.

I sourced the paintable front bumper, front fenders and cab corners locally, so I guess I'll work with my body shop to get the grill, mirrors and door handles locally too. They'll soon be ready to paint the truck.

I'll try http://www.latemodelrestoration.com/products/ccktruck.aspx for the rest. Hopefully, the experience is a more productive one than trying to buy products from LMC. :eyerole

I posted this concern on the truck discussion board and several people have experienced similar situations.

Well, I guess my money stays in Canada. Working with my local garage guy (on a Saturday morning even) ;) we found sources for 80% of the items I had ordered from LMC. I should have worked with him from the beginning, but I honestly didn't think it would be easy to find what I wanted locally. I was wrong.

When you take into account shipping fees, UPS brokerage fees and time wasted, I actually came out ahead on the deal.

Now to call up and cancel the order (although after all this time they probably lost it anyway). Sorry LMC Truck. My money stays in my town. :beer

Apparently the way to find out what the shipping charges are is to cancel.

Within 30 minutes Stephanie (a supervisor) called to tell me that the shipping charge information was available when I called to cancel and the employee should have told me what they were.

That's just amazing. What a way to run a company. If I was in charge I'd do everything possible not to loose an order of that size. I'm glad that you found most of the stuff locally. I would rather buy close to home and go pick up the parts myself, even if it cost a little more. You still save the shipping and other expenses. I drove up to Paragon and picked up my last big list of small parts I needed. It is a bit of a drive but I was already up to Windsor that day anyway. I like to wonder around the place and see all that they have going on.

The old white truck should look great when you are done. Is there anything that you still need? I may be able to find a better source.

Yes, Tom. I can source the side adhesive-backed body mouldings locally (in rolls), but I want the pre-cut kind with the cut-outs for the "Bowtie 1500" door emblems. Also, they must be all black, whereas most sources only have the black with chrome ridge along the top.

At the end of the process, I learned something about why their shipping calculations take so long. You may wish to sit down for this one.....

They pull the actual order (even though you may not have provided a credit card for billing yet) and package the order, and then weigh the order, and then calculate the shipping to your location.

Did you all read the above paragraph carefully? If not, please read it again. I'll wait. ;) http://www3.sympatico.ca/bob-johnston/smiley-toetap.gif

I asked if they didn't have the shipping weight of each of their items on the computer so that they could easily generate a total shipping weight and shipping size at the time of order. The answer? NO.

According to the employee I talked to, these orders are pulled in the warehouse, packaged, and then weighed. The potential buyer is then notified about the charges and a great many decide to cancel the order......which requires the items to be returned to the shelving in the warehouse. http://www3.sympatico.ca/bob-johnston/smiley-rolleyes.gif

That procedure is just too stupid for words, so I'll just use a smiley. :crazy

So you have located everything now?

Tom,

I found everything now except for the dark sliding rear window and the two power conversion kits (windows and door locks).

So far LMC Truck is the only place I've found them (under their accessories/aftermarket catalog section). I doubt they're making them so I'll keep looking elsewhere.

The good news is I'll have almost everything else by midweek in time to run the paintable pieces over to the body shop.

The way the weather's been lately, I might better slap one of these babies on too........

Tom,

I've decided to sell the tilt fibreglass lid anyway. The problem with them is when you want to throw a horse up in the back, you have to unbolt the lid from the front and take it right off. Nothing tall fits under the tilt.

I'm gonna buy one of those vinyl covers that roll-up completely out of the way, but all they do is keep the weather out. ;)

Thanks, Mac.

After the safety and emissions checks, but before paint and trim changes, I sent him a photo. Here's his response from December 9th.

Hi Bob,

It was great to hear from you! I have been wondering if you are happy with the truck. The changes you have made look great and it's good to hear that it passed both tests without too much work. I especially like the new wheels and tires! I know my truck has found a good home!

Thanks for sending along the picture!

Once the black side mouldings (still waiting for a few pieces) and red door emblems are on, I'll show him the new paint job.

Next week, I'm having a local auto interior trim shop install new headliner and sun visor cloth. The existing cloth has de-laminated from the foam backing. That's about all the interior requires.

After that, it's a new gun-rack and a bloodhound named Bubba. :D

Note to my Canadian friends: It really does help to push the Canadian pricing issue. The local dealer wanted $397.00 for the same Extang cover that I could order from an online U.S. site for $231.00 plus shipping.

Fortunately, I took along a printout of the actual pricing information from that site and the local store manager dropped the price from $397.00 down to $275.00 (no shipping costs and no border brokerage fees to me). :upthumbs

When I told him I'd be ordering online if he wasn't willing to "get reasonable", it's amazing how reasonable he got. ;)

The diamond clear front signal lights finally arrived. I'll get them on and post a comparison soon.

What a surprise. They don't fit. At least they don't fit if you actually attach the inboard light socket. :eyerole

On their website, these items are listed as fitting 1988 - 1998 C/K1500 trucks. They are actually made for 1994 - 1998.

So, the question is, should I make them fit (alterations to the radiator support panel just behind the lights) or go through the nightmare of returning them across the border? :eyerole

It's always something.
